Don’t Take Your Cup Holders for Granted
In a recent blog post, we told you all about the all-new 2019 Volkswagen Jetta. One thing we didn’t mention in that post is the vehicle’s cup holders. Just like the rest of the new Volkswagen Jetta was redesigned, so were the automobile’s cup holders.
When they’re looking for Volkswagen cars for sale at our Colombia, MO VW dealership, many drivers don’t think much about cup holders. That’s not the case for the Volkswagen brand’s engineers and designers, however. Unlike most motorists, those talented professionals think about cup holders a lot.
While you may take cup holders for granted, it wasn’t until the early 1980s that the first feasible cup holders were made part of family vehicles. Today, it’s not unusual to see automobiles that have a generous number of cup holders throughout. The 2018 VW Tiguan SUV has 12 cup holders, for example. Not to be outdone, the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas has 17 cup holders.
The VW brand always listens to customer feedback in the context of design. When drivers said the cup holders in previous iterations of the VW Jetta weren’t quite up to snuff, the automaker’s engineers went to work. The results of their hard work include updated driver and front passenger cup holders that can accommodate a mug with a handle and deeper cup holders in the rear of the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta.
“By updating the materials at the bottom of the cupholder itself to use a softer plastic, it allowed for a much deeper, more efficient feature that was not only more functional, but also maintained the comfort of the center seatback when the console was up,” says Carsten Scharf, senior manager for concept and design quality for Volkswagen Group of America.
